I laid awake wondering how I could put into words the most incredible day I've had thus far. If I said "this is unbelievable" once yesterday....I said it 100 times
First, a little background about the music program that has been offered to the children and youth involved in Kids First. About a year and a half ago I was invited to speak to the school body at Leland, following which a girl approached me and said "I want to help!". Her name is Zoe Moseler and she began raising money at her parent's distillery in Lake Leelanau by placing a jar at the register. In a short time she collected $150 and I asked her what she would like me to do with this money. She told me she would like to have funds raised used for a music or theater program. She has since raised enough money to hire a music director for these children....and so much more.
Let me introduce the music director...his name is Peter Kaweesa Mulondo. He has worked with many groups of kids and choirs throughout Uganda and has taken some to Holland, Germany, and in 2014 he toured the southern and eastern US, including an appearance at the US Senate. He has a diploma in music but he tells me that his calling above all is to serve the children and young people in Africa through music. He is a Christian committed to fulfilling Christ's mission through songwriting, training, and directing. Peter began working with our children during their Christmas holiday and yesterday I truly witnessed something quite unbelievable! I felt as if I was witnessing a miracle!
They say a photo can tell a story, thus I will be attaching a few with this email. I took many videos with hopes of finding someone technical to splice and put together when I return home. In four short months these kids learned to dance and sing as professionals. Peter, Joshua, and I had dinner last night agreeing that, like soccer, teaching kids to perform offers them the confidence needed to pursue their dreams.
The funds Zoe has raised thus far has paid for a beautiful set of drums, sub hoofers, DVD player, salary for Peter, a choreographer, costumes made by one of our Kids First women (thus giving her income), extension cables, rent for space used yesterday for the performance, as well as feeding 400 at the event (cooked and served by the women of KF!) So many children and adults came to me yesterday with greetings for Zoe, asking me to tell her WEBALE (thank you) and that will God bless her!
Kids First has been so blessed by support from my community since I became involved. This year we became a recognized organization by the State of Michigan with IRS 501(c)3 approval. I am here in Uganda to review programs that have been started with funds raised in Leelanau, to review budgets, and to plan for the future. Please join Zoe, me, KFU Michigan Board of Directors, the Leland Comets, as well as those in Australia and New Zealand who are giving so generously of their time and money. Trust me..a little goes a long way and all money raised goes directly into the program!
This journey has been unbelievable and time is going quickly with ten days remaining and so much more work to do. Stay tuned and thank you for your continued prayers and love.
