In New Zealand, we don't write letters much any more. I'm sure you don't either. Emails. Txts. Tweets. But not a slow, caring, handwritten letter. How awesome is it to receive one of these, though? To know that someone has spent their precious time on you and you alone. Thinking about what you would like to hear and carefully writing every sentence, perhaps even adding a picture or two.
In Michigan, Mary has set up a penpal programme with kids from her local school, writing to kids involved in Kids First. Initially we thought there would only be a few involved - who has the time these days to sit and write rather than type? Well the Michigan kids rocked it with a whole bunch of letters being posted over to Kampala. On our end, the arrival of these letters was a celebration almost bigger than Christmas! Even kids who tag on to our Sunday Soccer programme came out to see what the fuss was about, and how special did they feel when they were handed their very own letter. That's right. A child on the other side of the world had written and posted this just for them!! Our kids were so eager to write back to their new best friends, there was hardly room to spare. Check out the photos below of beaming smiles from our kids, and inventive ways of using space where there are no desks, let alone tables....
Here at Kids First we all have something to say, so this blog will be updated by members of our team as our work progresses to keep all of you in the loop!
